Memphis Man Attending Widespread Panic Concert Dies in Police Custody (Updated)

UPDATED: Video shows Mississippi cops hogtie Troy Goode, demand witnesses cease recording. Story also updated to correct Goode’s city of residence as Memphis, Tennessee.

A family is demanding answers after a 30-year-old Memphis, Tennessee resident with no criminal record died in police custody after he was hog-tied and placed face down on a stretcher.

Troy Goode, 30, a chemical engineer with a 15-month-old child, had gone to a Widespread Panic concert with his wife in Southaven, Ms.

But he became so intoxicated – possibly on LSD – that his wife decided to drive them home as the concert was just beginning.

During the ride home, Goode reportedly jumped out of the car and became erratic.  Southhaven Police were called to a shopping plaza regarding the disturbance as Goode was allegedly running around and fighting with his wife.

According to police, officers “attempted to detain the subject who began to resist and run from them again. He was eventually restrained by Officers and transferred to an awaiting ambulance to be transported to the hospital.”

The attorney for the family, Tim Edwards, told local station WREG that a witness to the incident has reportedly stated that Goode was heard screaming that he couldn’t breathe.  Goode was asthmatic.

“They showed up in force and subdued him,” Edwards said. “They hogtied and put his face down on the stretcher.”

By 11 PM, Goode’s mother was notified that he had died.  His wife had believed that he had just been taken to jail and was not even aware that he was taken to a hospital.

“I do know that Baptist reported to Troy’s mother that he was stable and less than two hours later they called and said he’d expired.” Edwards told The Commercial Appeal.

Edwards believes that there was a witness who was filming the incident and has urged the person who shot it to come forward to help them piece together what exactly happened.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
